Tenors who loved to belt it out!!

A thrilling compilation of tenors who had the reputation of being able to knock  your socks off with brilliant top notes. I know you will enjoy them, as long as you do not expect The Dichterliebe.

Mario Gilion, Eduardo Garbin, Antonio Paoli, Giovanni Zenatello, John O'Sullivan (pictured), Leon Escalais, Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, Bernardo De Muro, Galliano Masini, Mario Filippeschi, Gino Penno, Mario del Monaco, and Franco Corelli     (73 min.)

Thanks for the O'Sullivan. He was a favorite of James Joyce (another tenor) as I'm sure you know. As a person of Irish descendant I wish he had been the sort of voice that the public associated with the term "Irish Tenor" not McCormack.

I also love de Muro (and de Muro Lomanto - a rater different kind of tenor). I like Lauri-Volpi on electrical recordings after he cleaned up his vibrato. And I have always had a weakness for Filipeschi.

It is more than odd that you leave out Kiepura -just hear him live
from the met with Pons or live from Vienna opera (see you tube )
    Is there a bias ???????

Great podcast! I love MDM's high notes, when he hit them on pitch ;-D

WOW that Norma excerpt with Penno was stunning. probably the most exciting version I've heard, if only it were a better recording (live=wow)

My grandfather always spoke of Caruso and Ruffo but spoke often of what a terrific dramatic voice O'Sullivan had. Sounds like he was an excellent Otello.

Thanks for the De Muro! I've only heard a few tracks of his, mainly on your show. I certainly wouldn't mind more! :)

Thank you for such a magnificent podcast. I know you could not have included them all, but Lazaro should be in. No one could belt it out more like him although sometimes, or should I say most of the times there was a lack of refinement.
